Be used to käytämme

Jos used to viittaa menneisyyden säännöllisiin toimintoihin, jotka ovat jo loppuneet, niin rakennetta be used to käytetään nykyisiin tottumuksiin.
Se ilmaisee toimintaa tai tilannetta, jota pidetään henkilölle normaalina ja tuttuna.

Rakennetta voidaan käyttää preesensissä, imperfektissä ja futuurissa:
am / is / are used to, was / were used to, will be used to.

She is used to getting up early.
Hän on tottunut heräämään aikaisin.
He said he was used to the long working hours.
Hän sanoi olevansa tottunut pitkiin työpäiviin.
At first I wasn’t comfortable, but soon I was used to speaking in meetings.

Be used to Muoto

Yleinen lauserakenne rakenteella be used to:
verbin be jonkin muodon jälkeen käytämme used to,
ja sen jälkeen gerundia (verbi, joka päättyy -ing) tai substantiivia.

Be used to Sääntö

  • Tässä rakenteessa ilmauksen used to jälkeen käytämme aina substantiivia tai verbiä, joka päättyy -ing-päätteeseen, emme infinitiiviä.
    ❌ She is used to study at night.
    ✅ She is used to studying at night.
  • Be used to kuvaa tilaa (tottumisen tulosta), ei itse prosessia.
    Prosessia ilmaistaan rakenteella get used to.
    I am used to the schedule now.
    Olen tottunut aikatauluun nyt.
    I am getting used to the schedule.
    Totuttelen aikatauluun.
  • Sitä käytetään usein ilmaisemaan kontrastia: aluksi jokin oli vaikeaa tai vierasta, mutta nyt se tuntuu normaalilta. Tällaisissa lauseissa näkee usein sanoja kuten aluksi, nyt, enää ja vastaavia ilmauksia.
    At first the job was stressful, but now I am used to it.
    Aluksi työ oli stressaavaa, mutta nyt olen tottunut siihen.

Be used to Kielteinen muoto

Kun sanomme, että joku ei ole tottunut johonkin, lisäämme kiellon not verbin be muotoon: am not / isn’t / aren’t / wasn’t / weren’t used to.

He is not used to waking up early.
Hän ei ole tottunut heräämään aikaisin.

Kysymyksissä käytämme tavallista käänteistä sanajärjestystä verbin be kanssa:
muoto am / is / are / was / were tulee ennen subjektia.
Rakenteen muu osa (used to + gerundi / substantiivi) pysyy muuttumattomana.

Oletko tottunut työskentelemään kotoa käsin?

Wh-kysymyksissä lisäämme kysymyssanan (what, where, why, how, who jne.) ennen verbiä be. Rakenteen loppuosa pysyy samana.
