Muoto riippuu siitä, puhummeko yhdestä asiasta / ei-laskettavasta substantiivista vai useammasta kuin yhdestä asiasta.

There are + plural noun

There is / There are Sääntö

  • There is -rakennetta käytetään yksiköllisen substantiivin kanssa, ja there are -rakennetta käytetään monikollisen substantiivin kanssa.
    ✅ There is a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There are two lamps near the bed.
  • Ei-laskettavien substantiivien kanssa käytämme yleensä muotoa there is.
    There is enough time.
    Aikaa on tarpeeksi.
    There is some information in the email.
    Sähköpostissa on joitakin tietoja.
  • Rakenteen jälkeen lisäämme usein paikan tai muun yksityiskohdan: pöydällä, huoneessa, koulussa.

  • Myöntölauseissa käytämme usein some, ja kysymys- ja kieltolauseissa käytämme usein any.

  • Puhutussa englannissa there is lyhennetään usein muotoon there’s. Ilmauksessa there are koko muoto on yleensä suositumpi.

  • Jos luettelo tulee rakenteen jälkeen, verbi kongruoi usein luettelon ensimmäisen substantiivin kanssa.
    ✅ There is a sofa and two chairs in the living room.

Kielto muodostetaan sanalla not: there is not / there isn’t ja there are not / there aren’t.
