A There was / There were szerkezetet arra használjuk, hogy kifejezzük: valami létezett, jelen volt, vagy valahol megtalálható volt a múltban.

There was a book on the table yesterday.
Tegnap egy könyv volt az asztalon.
There were two students in the classroom.
Két diák volt a tanteremben.

There was / There were Forma

A forma attól függ, hogy a múltban egy dologról / megszámlálhatatlan főnévről vagy egynél több dologról beszélünk.

There was a problem with the printer this morning.
Ma reggel probléma volt a nyomtatóval.

There was / There were Szabály

  • A there was egyes számú főnévvel használatos, a there were pedig többes számú főnévvel.
    ✅ There was a lamp near the bed.

  • Megszámlálhatatlan főnevekkel általában a there was alakot használjuk.
    There was enough food for everyone.
    Mindenkinek elég étel volt.
    There was some information in the report.
    Volt némi információ a jelentésben.
  • A szerkezet után gyakran hozzáadunk egy helyet vagy egy időre vonatkozó részletet: a szobában, az asztalon, tegnap este.
    There was a cat under the chair.
    Volt egy macska a szék alatt.
    There were many people at the bus stop yesterday.
    Tegnap sok ember volt a buszmegállóban.
  • Kijelentő mondatokban gyakran a some-ot használjuk, kérdésekben és tagadó mondatokban pedig gyakran az any-t.

    ✅ There weren’t any cookies in the box.
  • A beszélt angolban a there was gyakran a szabályos alakjában használatos, a tagadó forma pedig általában there wasn’t-re rövidül. A there were esetében a teljes alak vagy a there weren’t gyakori.
    ✅ There wasn’t any message for you.
    ✅ There were several mistakes in the text.
  • Ha egy felsorolás a szerkezet után következik, az ige gyakran a lista első főnevével egyezik meg.
    ✅ There was a sofa and two chairs in the living room.

A tagadást a not szóval képezzük: there was not / there wasn’t és there were not / there weren’t.
