Tvar závisí na tom, zda mluvíme o jedné věci / nepočitatelném podstatném jménu, nebo o více než jedné věci v minulosti.

  • There was se používá s podstatným jménem v jednotném čísle a there were se používá s podstatným jménem v množném čísle.

  • U nepočitatelných podstatných jmen obvykle používáme there was.

  • Po této struktuře často přidáváme údaj o místě nebo o čase: v místnosti, na stole, včera večer.

  • V mluvené angličtině se there was často používá ve svém běžném tvaru a záporný tvar se obvykle zkracuje na there wasn’t. U there were je běžný plný tvar nebo there weren’t.

  • Pokud po dané struktuře následuje seznam, sloveso se často shoduje s prvním podstatným jménem v seznamu.
