There was / There were は、過去に何かが存在した、あった、またはどこかに位置していたことを表すために使われます。

There was a book on the table yesterday.
昨日、テーブルの上に本がありました。
There were two students in the classroom.

There was / There were フォーム

その形は、過去において1つのもの／不可算名詞について話しているのか、それとも複数のものについて話しているのかによって決まります。

There was / There were ルール

  • There was は単数名詞と一緒に使い、there were は複数名詞と一緒に使います。
    ✅ There was a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There were two lamps near the bed.
  • 不可算名詞には、通常there wasを使います。
    There was enough food for everyone.
    みんなに十分な食べ物があった。
    There was some information in the report.
    報告書にはいくつかの情報がありました。
  • その構文のあとには、よく場所や時間の詳細を付け加えます：部屋の中で、テーブルの上で、昨夜。
    There was a cat under the chair.

  • 肯定文では、よくsomeを使い、疑問文や否定文ではよくanyを使います。

  • 口語の英語では、there was はしばしばその通常形で使われ、否定形は一般に there wasn’t に短縮されます。there were では、完全形または there weren’t が一般的です。

  • 構造の後にリストが来る場合、動詞はしばしばそのリストの最初の名詞と一致します。
