Past Continuous usiamo

Il Past Continuous si usa per descrivere azioni che si stavano svolgendo in un momento specifico del passato, processi in corso, situazioni di sfondo, azioni simultanee e azioni interrotte da un altro evento.

Past Continuous Regola

• Il Past Continuous si usa per azioni che accadevano in un momento specifico del passato.
  I was reading an email at that moment.
  Stavo leggendo un'email in quel momento.
  She was speaking to a client at 10 o'clock.
  Stava parlando con un cliente alle dieci.
• Si usa per azioni o processi più lunghi nel passato.
  They were talking all night.
  Parlavano tutta la notte.
  He was studying for hours.
  Stava studiando da ore.
• Il Past Continuous descrive un'azione di sfondo più lunga, mentre il Past Simple indica l'azione che la interrompe.
  I was cooking when he called.
  Stavo cucinando quando ha chiamato.
  They were walking home when it started to rain.
  Stavano tornando a casa quando ha cominciato a piovere.
• Può descrivere due azioni che avvengono contemporaneamente.
  I was doing my homework while my sister was watching TV.
  Stavo facendo i compiti mentre mia sorella guardava la TV.
  She was writing emails while he was making phone calls.
  Stava scrivendo email mentre lui faceva telefonate.
• Il past continuous è spesso usato per descrivere situazioni di sfondo.
  People were walking in the park and children were playing.
  La gente passeggiava nel parco e i bambini giocavano.
  Music was playing and everyone was dancing.
  La musica stava suonando e tutti stavano ballando.
• Il Past Continuous può essere usato con always per esprimere fastidio o azioni ripetute.
  He was always complaining about his job.
  Si lamentava sempre del suo lavoro.
  She was always leaving the lights on.
  Lasciava sempre le luci accese.
• Tra gli indicatori di tempo comuni ci sono:
  in quel momento, alle 17, mentre, quando, tutto il giorno, tutta la sera
  She was working late that evening.
  Stava lavorando fino a tardi quella sera.
  I was feeling tired all day.
  Mi sono sentito stanco tutto il giorno.
• Ci sono semplici regole ortografiche per formare -ing.
  • Se un verbo termina in -e, eliminiamo la e e aggiungiamo -ing.
  • Se un verbo finisce in consonante-vocale-consonante, raddoppiamo la consonante finale.
  • Se un verbo termina in -ie, lo cambiamo in y e aggiungiamo -ing.
  make → making, run → running, lie → lying
• Alcuni verbi di solito non si usano nelle forme continue (know, like, want, need, understand).
  ✅ I knew the answer.

  ❌ I was knowing the answer.

Past Continuous Negazione

• La negazione si forma con was not e were not.
  I was not working at that time.
  Non stavo lavorando in quel periodo.
  She wasn't listening to music.
  Non stava ascoltando musica.
  They weren't waiting outside.
  Non stavano aspettando fuori.

Past Continuous Domande

Nelle domande, was / were viene prima del soggetto.

Was / Were + subject + V-ing?
