There is / There are wordt gebruikt om te zeggen dat iets bestaat, aanwezig is of zich ergens bevindt. Deze structuur helpt om een persoon, ding of voorwerp in het gesprek te introduceren.

Er zijn twee leerlingen in het klaslokaal.

There is / There are Vorm

De vorm hangt ervan af of we het hebben over één ding / een niet-telbaar zelfstandig naamwoord of meer dan één ding.

There is a problem with the printer.
Er is een probleem met de printer.

Er is wat melk in de koelkast.

There is / There are Regel

  • There is wordt gebruikt met een zelfstandig naamwoord in het enkelvoud, en there are wordt gebruikt met een zelfstandig naamwoord in het meervoud.
    ✅ There is a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There are two lamps near the bed.
  • Met niet-telbare zelfstandige naamwoorden gebruiken we meestal there is.
    There is enough time.
    Er is genoeg tijd.
    There is some information in the email.
    Er staat wat informatie in de e-mail.
  • Na de structuur voegen we vaak een plaats of ander detail toe: op de tafel, in de kamer, op school.
    There is a cat under the chair.
    Er zit een kat onder de stoel.
    There are many people at the bus stop.
    Er staan veel mensen bij de bushalte.
  • In bevestigende zinnen gebruiken we vaak some, en in vragen en ontkennende zinnen gebruiken we vaak any.

  • In gesproken Engels wordt there is vaak verkort tot there’s. Voor there are krijgt de volledige vorm meestal de voorkeur.

  • Als een opsomming na de zinsconstructie komt, stemt het werkwoord vaak overeen met het eerste zelfstandig naamwoord in de opsomming.
