There is / There are é usado para dizer que algo existe, está presente ou está localizado em algum lugar. Essa estrutura ajuda a introduzir uma pessoa, coisa ou objeto na conversa.

There is a book on the table.

Há dois alunos na sala de aula.

There is / There are Forma

A forma depende de estarmos a falar de uma coisa / um substantivo incontável ou de mais do que uma coisa.

There is + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are + plural noun

There is a problem with the printer.
Há um problema com a impressora.

There is some milk in the fridge.
Há algum leite na geladeira.

There are three chairs in the room.
Há três cadeiras na sala.

There is / There are Regra

There is é usado com um substantivo singular, e there are é usado com um substantivo plural.

✅ There is a lamp near the bed.

✅ There are two lamps near the bed.
Com substantivos incontáveis, geralmente usamos there is.
There is enough time.
Há tempo suficiente.

There is some information in the email.
Há algumas informações no e-mail.
Depois da estrutura, frequentemente acrescentamos um lugar ou outro detalhe: sobre a mesa, na sala, na escola.
There is a cat under the chair.
Há um gato debaixo da cadeira.

There are many people at the bus stop.
Há muitas pessoas na parada de ônibus.
Em frases afirmativas, costumamos usar some, e em perguntas e frases negativas costumamos usar any.

No inglês falado, there is é frequentemente abreviado para there’s. Para there are, a forma completa geralmente é preferida.

Se uma lista vier após a estrutura, o verbo frequentemente concorda com o primeiro substantivo da lista.

A negação é formada com not: there is not / there isn’t e there are not / there aren’t.
