Modal Verbs 使用する

このトピックでは、must、have to、don’t have to、および mustn’t を使って、義務、必要性、必要がないこと、および 禁止 について話します。

I must finish this report today.

Modal Verbs フォーム

Must は法助動詞です。must と mustn’t の後には、 to をつけない 動詞の原形（V1）を使います。 Have to は別の構文です。これも後ろに動詞が続きますが、 have の形は変化します：have to、has to、had to。

must + V1
mustn’t + V1
have to / has to / had to + V1
don’t / doesn’t / didn’t have to + V1

She must call them now.
彼女は今すぐ彼らに電話しなければならない。

Modal Verbs ルール

  • Must は、強い必要性や義務を表すために使われます。 話し手自身の決定や強い気持ち、または非常に重要な規則を示すことがよくあります。
    I must talk to her today.
    私は今日彼女と話さなければならない。
    Passengers must wear seat belts.
    乗客はシートベルトを着用しなければなりません。
  • Have to は、義務がたいてい 外部から 生じるときに使われます。 つまり、規則、予定、仕事、学校、状況、または他の人からです。
    I have to get up at six for work.
    仕事のために6時に起きなければならない。
    She has to show her ID at the entrance.
    彼女は入口で身分証明書を提示しなければならない。
  • 過去の義務については、通常 had to を使います。 過去の義務について話すときに、通常 must は使いません。
    ✅ We had to leave early yesterday.
    ❌ We must leave early yesterday.
  • Mustn’t は禁止を意味します。つまり、してはいけないということです。 それは単なる助言ではなく、規則、禁止事項、または何かをしないようにという非常に強い指示です。
    You mustn’t park here.
    ここに駐車してはいけません。
    Students mustn’t use their phones during the test.
    学生は試験中に携帯電話を使ってはいけません。
  • Don’t have to は 必要がない という意味です。 これは重要です：don’t have to は禁止を意味しません。 その行動をしてもよいですが、必要ではありません。
    ✅ You don’t have to come early. (it is optional)
    ✅ You mustn’t come early. (it is not allowed)
  • must と mustn’t の後では、to を付けずに V1 だけを使います。 have to の後でも、動詞の原形を使いますが、構造自体に to が含まれています。

  • Must は主語によって変化しません。I must、she must、they must。 しかし、have to は変化します。I have to、he has to、we had to。
    ✅ He must wait.

  • must を使う疑問文では、動詞が主語の前に来ます： Must I ...? しかし、日常英語では、have to を使う疑問文のほうがより自然なことがよくあります： Do I have to ...?

    今これを終わらせなければなりませんか？
    Do we have to book in advance?
    事前に予約しなければなりませんか？

Modal Verbs 否定

このトピックには、否定の意味が2種類あります。 Mustn’t = 許されていない、つまり禁止。 Don’t / doesn’t / didn’t have to = その必要はなかった／ない、 したがって義務はありません。

mustn’t + V1
don’t / doesn’t / didn’t have to + V1

You mustn’t tell anyone about this.
このことは誰にも話してはいけません。
He doesn’t have to work on Sundays.
彼は日曜日に働く必要はありません。
We didn’t have to pay for parking.

Modal Verbs 質問

must を使う疑問文は、do を使わずに作ります。 have to を使う疑問文は、do / does / did を使って作ります。
