Past Perfect use

Past Perfect is used to talk about an action that happened before another action or point in the past.

She had left before I arrived.

Past Perfect Form

Subject + had + V3.

I had finished the report before the meeting started.
They had already gone home when we called.

Past Perfect Rule

  • Past Perfect shows that one action happened before another action in the past.
    When I arrived, they had already started the meeting.
    He had locked the door before he left.
  • It is often used with before, after, when, and by the time.
    By the time we got to the station, the train had left.
    After she had finished the task, she went for a walk.
  • It is often used with words like already, just, and never.
    I had already seen that film before we watched it together.
    She had never visited that city before her business trip.
  • It is often used with expressions like by 5 o'clock, by Monday, or by the end of the week when we talk about a result before a past time.
    By Friday, we had finished the project.
    By the end of the day, she had answered all the emails.
  • Past Perfect can be used to explain a reason or result in the past.
    He was tired because he had worked all night.
    They missed the flight because they had left home too late.

Past Perfect Negation

  • Negation is formed with had not or the short form hadn't.
    I hadn't finished the report before the manager arrived.
    She hadn't seen the message before the meeting started.

Past Perfect Questions

In questions, had comes before the subject.

Had + subject + V3?
Wh-word + had + subject + V3?

Had you finished the report before the deadline?
Had she left before you called?
Why had they cancelled the meeting?
Where had he worked before he moved to London?
